My earliest recollections are being on and around the ocean - sailing, hunting for quahogs, fishing and rowing dinghies. To this day I love the ocean, watching the effect of light as it plays across a reflective surface. Once I became introduced to encaustic medium, I realized I had found a process that could create a reflective and three-dimensional surface to enhance my mixed-media seascapes and landscapes. I was hooked.
Most recently, I've created lamps and sculptures from cypress driftwood collected in North Carolina. The driftwood is cleaned, scraped, sanded and waxed to highlight its natural color and unique wood grain. Reeds are bent to create complimentary shade structures and multiple layers of archival tissue paper and white glue are added to form the outer 'skin'.
